How to properly apply gel nail polish? Step-by-step gel nail styling.
Gel styling can look spectacular… but only when it is done technically correct. Durability, lack of air pockets and a perfect light line are not determined by a "strong gel", but by the sequence of stages, preparation of the plate and the correct construction of the architecture.
In this guide, we'll give you a proven, step-by-step workflow: from nail preparation, through base and build-up, to top coat. You'll also find specific Modena Nails products, which make work easier and help maintain consistent quality in the salon.

Step by step: proper gel application
Step 1: Manicure and nail plate preparation (this is the foundation of durability)
- Push back and shape cuticles (safely and thoroughly)
- Remove the epithelium from the nail plate – especially around the ridges
- Matte the nail plate (gently, without overheating and without "filing" the natural nail)
- Remove dust – this is important: dust acts as a "separator" and can kill adhesion
If you want to make your work on skins faster and easier, you can use Cuticle Remover, which softens cuticles and epithelium, making them easier to remove.
Step 2: Degreasing and dehydrating the plate
After a manicure, always follow two logical steps:
- Cleaning/degreasing - e.g. Cleaner Extra Clean, which is used to degrease and clean the nail plate before applying gels/hybrids
- Dehydration (dehydrator) - e.g. Cleaner UltraBond, whose role is to remove moisture/sebum and prepare for further layers, without the need for curing in a lamp
Tip: After dehydrating, the plate should be "dry" and ready for the next step. Don't touch it with your fingers.
Step 3: Primer
Apply spot, thin, only on the natural nail plate, avoid skin. Let it evaporate.
Select primer according to your nail type:
- Acid-Free Primer – more delicate, recommended for normal and sensitive nails
- Acid Primer – for problematic nails with a tendency to loosen
- Primer Vital Pro – acid-free, "reinforced", with vitamins; leaves a sticky layer "like tape"
Preparing the plate – the key to durability
Remember that correct preparation of the plate This is 80% of the success of gel styling. Without proper degreasing and priming, even the best gel can flake off.
SEE PREPARATIONSStep 4: Gel base – apply thinly and massage in (lotion)
In gel styling, the base coat is not meant to create a "thick layer". Its purpose is binder between the plate and the gel.
- Base Gel – a base with very high adhesion (in the description compared to "the strongest double-sided tape")
- If you work with sensitive/allergic clients: Allergy Safe Rubber Base Clear – base without HEMA/HPMA/TPO
Step 5: Builder Gel – Correct Application Technique
This is the stage where the structure is created. Whether you're building a short extension on a natural tile or creating a superstructure/short extension, the principle is similar:
Put it on a thin lubricating layer (slip layer) gel. Then take a ball of gel and spread it, building it up:
- apex (stress point)
- correct thickness on the free edge
- symmetry of the sides
Turn your client's hand away for a few seconds (if using self-leveling gel) and monitor the light reflection. Only then cure.
How to choose a gel according to your pace and preferences?
- If you want maximum control and peace of mind: Thixo Control Gel (thixotropy, stability)
- If working with sensitive skin is a priority: Allergy SAFE Builder Gel Clear (HEMA and HPMA free, TPO-Free)
- If you like natural, milky designs with a subtle glow: GLOW Builder Gel

CHECK THE GELSStep 6: Curing – How to avoid under-polymerization
The rule here is simple: lamp time and power must match the product.
Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for a specific mass and remember that a very thick layer requires special control (it is better to build it correctly than to "flood" the nail with the material).
Step 7: Processing (filing) and preparing for color
After the gel has hardened:
- if the product has a dispersion layer, remove it with a cleaner and only then work on the shape
- shape with a file, smooth the surface with a block
- remove dust and wipe the plate (e.g. Cleaner Extra Clean)
Step 8: Top – finishing the styling and securing the shine
Apply a glossy or matte top coat to the finished styling, depending on the client's preference and expectations.
- Glossy Top Coat – Non Wipe – top coat without dispersion layer
- Alternative for sensitive skin: Allergy Safe Top No Wipe – without HEMA/HPMA/TPO
- Quick Top Matte – useful if the client wants a mat
